Proteins and Short Science

Did ya hear me on this morning’s Short Science? Did ya? Did ya?

Yeah I missed it too, but thank heavens for podcasts. This ep has me introducing proteins. The night before submitting my script I had an idea of a much better treatment, but didn’t have enough time to finalise it (or get permission from Elizabeth for the slightly odd style). Still, I kept working on it. Never finished it though, true to form. Anyhoo, here’s the script and the bit of audio I prepped.

Now I  just need to find out what amino acids are :-s

STUDENTS ENJOYING THEMSELVES

You’re on the college lawn, it’s forty years ago, and you’re a hippy. Someone’s playing a guitar and you’re making daisy chains with your long haired girlfriend.

BUZZ OF BEE

The college gardens have lots of small flowers, and being a bit of a rebel you pick a load of them to make your daisy chains more elaborate.

So it’s not just daisies but … … … … wild clematis, lime flower, lavender, camomile, wild roses. You might find 20 in the garden. Twenty two, let’s say.

BEAT ON FLOWER NAMES

And you know, each of those flowers has its own qualities. Some are more funereal than others, some more beautiful than others, some are more romantic… Some have medicinal properties, some are good in tea!

CHOP AND CHANGE OF FLOWER NAMES

And the same is true of the daisy chains you make – depending on how you mix the flowers up you can have very different flower chains, that you could use for very different things. And if you and your fellow hippies are extremely, how shall I say this, manually dexterous, you can make enormous flower chains.

But you’re not just a super-intricate flower chain smith, no you’re also able to make them really fast. Super fast. Ten nano-seconds fast.

That’s gone from lovely to really weird. Enough with the pot-headed music. Proteins are big long chains, yes, but they’re not made of flowers!

Well duh. It’s an analogy. The flowers… are amino acids!

And then, what’s the point of these big flower-chains?

Well each combination has a certain fragrance, certain colour, and yes chemical make-up.

Maybe this flower chain will suit this girls clothes really well. Or that one, it’s colouring looks great on THAT girl, or that other chain over there, that’ll set off allergies.

SNEEZE

Or that entrepreneurial young chap over there, he might disassemble your flower chains and turn them into bouquets or wreaths. He’ll sell some at the hospital, some at church, some at the graveyard, some along the banks of the river…

Conclusion: those flowers from the garden, the twenty-two, can be formed into thousands of different things, for thousands of different purposes.
